No, Bartolo Colon should not start in the playoffs

I love Bartolo as much as the next guy.

Really, I do.

But he can't start in the playoffs.

Colon was great last night at first, then collapsed, finishing with a line of 6.1 innings, 5 hits and 3 runs. He allowed all of the runs in the 7th inning.

He had been cruising, but suddenly it all came undone, and that's Bartolo.

Colon is out

He's played a huge role this season, eating up innings and serving as a great mentor and role model for the Mets' younger guys.

But the reality is that he's pitched to a 4.15 ERA, and that's not someone I want near my playoff roster.

Here's a stat:

Colon has 14 wins. 12 of them are against the Braves, Marlins or the Phillies.

When he pitches against the rest of the league (i.e. the Cardinals, Dodgers and Cubs... all teams that he would likely face in the playoffs), he's 2-10.

If that doesn't make it crystal clear, I don't know what will.

Bartolo is great.

He's a total goofball and his presence has been a major boost for the Mets over the past two seasons.

There's just something about a 42-year old, 300lb + man going out there and getting it done against 26 year old men chiseled out of stone.

But let's call it what it is - he's an aging (aged?) pitcher who has no place in a playoff rotation for a team with legitimate championship aspirations.
