Beach Bum Fashion in the Spring 2016 Collections

One running aesthetic in the Spring 2016 collections that I've picked up on from the past couple fashion weeks is a beach bum and surf-happy style. While this style is definitely attached to an American lifestyle, the trend wasn't only making appearances at New York Fashion Week. The following designers let a California beachy vibe drive their spring collections.

Tommy Hilfiger

Who but Tommy would put a surfer cool collection down the runway in the most All-American Way? From rainbow crochet to knit bucket hats, Hilfiger added another dimension of California sun and surf to his often preppy collections. For a designer known for making wearable and versatile American sportswear, this beachy keen collection elevated the line while keeping up with the Hilfiger brand we've so long known and loved.

Dan and Dean Caten took their show to the beach for DSquared2's Spring 2016 collection, following the style of their Menswear 2016 collection. What makes DSquared2 stand out is the undeniable sex appeal of their clothes, amidst a sea of more modest fashion in Milan. The beach-bum approved, futuristic surfer looks were neoprene and leather, making them anything anyone should be wearing to the beach, but exactly what we want in our wardrobes.

BCBG Max Azria

BCBG's Spring collection appeals to the kind of Venice Beach Bum that never really touches water, but obviously with a high-fashion filter. Lubov Azria took influence from both surf and skate culture, and boy, did it show in the collection. To be honest, I was taken aback by the bucket hats and burnout prints, but I can't help but acknowlege a risk where one was definitely taken. What do you think of this unexpected collection?

...and swimwear as ready-to-wear

Arthur Arbesser, Rosie Assoulin, Ralph Lauren, Baja East, and Michael Kors, were just a handful of designers who replaced typical garments for swimwear ready for the streets in their spring collections. Whether you're late to do your laundry or just looking to infuse your look with some unexpected pieces, try replacing your typical bralette or layered pieces for swimsuits under sheerer or peek-a-boo pieces next season for a bit of the surf and sun look, without the designer price tag.
