Mariners hire Jerry Dipoto as new general manager

The Seattle Mariners are tired of being the whipping post of the American League and are re-making the franchise.

The first big move comes with their new general manager, as the team bought in Jerry Dipoto to run the front office.

"Jerry impressed us at each step of the process," Mariners president Kevin Mather said in a statement.

"He has a very unique skill set, having been a successful player in the majors (he was 27-24 pitching in eight seasons with the Indians, Mets and Rockies), then moving into front offices with steadily increasing responsibilities. Jerry has scouted, spent time in player development and has a track record as a very successful general manager.

The Mariners do have talent and many would say the team underachieved this year, as the club won 85 games and its postseason fate came down to the final weekend last year.

Jerry knows how to pull players in, as he convinced Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton to come to the Angels in the past couple of years. The team has money to spend and a couple nice pieces to build around. If he can rebuild their bullpen and acquire an ace next to Felix, watch out.
