5 Ways To Kill It At Your Next Job Interview

GIF

The most scary part about leaving college is the prospect of finding a job. College is a fluffy dream scape that's full of fun and terrifying hardships, but life afterward is a million times more scary.

The reality is, you have to get it together, and the first step is applying, putting yourself out there and getting an interview. There's a card for that as well: here.

1. Dress appropriately.

Dressing appropriately doesn't necessarily mean "dressing up" see what I mean? If you're going in for a casual job at a... young, start-up company for instance...you wouldn't wear a suit and tie, or a dress and heels. You'd probably wear a stylish, but comfortable outfit that shows your personality.

If you're interviewing at a law firm or medical establishment...by all means...dress up.

You've got to have tact, and dressing the part is definitely important. Look good, look put together, but don't overdo it.

2. Be genuine.

Nobody likes an ass-kisser. Trust me. People aren't looking for the perfect candidate, they're looking for their secret weapon. Think about it like this: if you were just like every other boring, professional, you probably wouldn't have gotten the interview. Your spark...your flare, your personality is the thing that made people bring you in for a follow up. So show that. Consider it a good thing to be unique...because newsflash: it is.

3. Be on time.

This is common sense for a lot of people...but you'd be surprised by the amount of people who screw this up. Employers are looking for people who are interesting, relatable, hard-working and RELIABLE. Being reliable is probably the most important one.

If you're late, you'd better just not show up. Seriously, don't be late.

4. Play up your strengths, but expose your weaknesses too.

You're not bionic, you're not perfect and you're not going to fool anyone. I had a huge problem with vulnerability, but now that I've been working for a while, I feel more comfortable talking about what I don't feel so good about. Nobody wants to hire a wooden, robotic employee, especially if you're in a creative field.

Go in guns blazing, and be honest.

5. Don't stress, because if you don't get it...there's no problem. There will always be another opportunity to those who seek them.

If you give up after one rejection, two rejections or even 10 rejections...you need to re-think things. Not everything we do is going to be a home run. Life is full of ups and downs. And although it's cliche...perseverance really pays off. Trust me...if you work hard enough, and continue to search for something better, things will work out.
