West Virginia In The Fall Is The Closest Thing To Heaven You'll See Today

Last week's story came with the idea of a trip, of telling life to leave him alone.

Last week I decided that in spite of life's many urgent obligations, I would take a drive to Harper's Ferry, WVA to play poker and enjoy the last week of autumn color.

That's exactly what I did.

While it rained for much of the two-day trip, I managed to dodge the drops long enough to enjoy a quick stroll on the stretch of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Harper's Ferry along the Shenandoah River.

A walk across one of the many footbridges in Harper's Ferry could turn anyone's day into an adventure.

It wasn't exactly as the armies of the blue and gray saw it in late October, 1862, but it was likely a fine representation. Since none of you could be there, I have provided a collection of photos. If you're feeling gumpy, then these are the cure.

Life can be so handsome when we're not looking. I think these photos, and Grumpy dad's impromptu trip can teach us a little something about taking time for ourselves, and the importance of living to the fullest even though it doesn't seem like we can. Would you like to visit Harper's Ferry? Which photo was your favorite?
