Taylor Swift Slapped With $42 Million Lawsuit Over Plagiarism

Shake it off, Taylor?

This is not a laughing matter for pop superstar, Taylor Swift. For being the biggest name in music, she's attracted quite a few haters and lawsuits on her way to the top.

Last week, Swift was slapped with a whopping $42 million lawsuit by an little known R&B artist named Jesse Graham. His shocking claim states that Swift's hit song from top selling album 1989, "Shake It Off", has a plagiarized chorus. He believes that Swift actually stole the phrase, "haters gonna hate, players gonna play". Graham's song "Haters Gone Hate" was released in 2013, a year before Swift's 1989 world release.

"Shake It Off" was Swift's first single to be released from the album where it debuted at the top of the charts around the world, received a Grammy nomination for Song Of The Year, and became platinum certified. This isn't the first song to be targeted for plagiarism. Swift's "Bad Blood" was target by hugely popular K-Pop group 2NE1 when their music videos were almost identical.

"At first I was going to let it go, but this song is my song all the way," he said to the New York Daily News. "If I didn't write the song 'Haters Gone Hate', there wouldn't be a song called 'Shake It Off."

So far, there is no reliable evidence that Swift really did steal the lyrics. "Haters gonna hate" and "players gonna play" are both generic and common phrases used within American teenage slang. It's not a stretch to say that Swift just took the phrases around her and put them in a song. Many find it very hard to believe that she ever could have come across a song that barely had over 1,000 views on YouTube prior to her single's release.

Graham still stands by his claim to the New York Daily News that there is "no way" that Swift managed to come up with the lyrics on her own. It's highly doubtful that Graham will get anything more than his current 15 minutes of fame. The views on his song have skyrocketed thanks to the media which may be exactly what he wanted.

Check out both songs and compare for yourself!

Do you think Swift really did steal the lyrics???
