In case you missed the hype, a new play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is in the works in London. The Cursed Child is essentially the eighth untold story of Harry, focusing on his relationship with his son Albus.
Hermione, portrayed as white in the movies, will be played by a black actress, Noma Dumezweni. Though, it was pointed out that Rowling never specified what race Hermione is within the books themselves.
And this isn't the first time theatre has had colorblind casting.
I love the casting decision they made, and so does J.K. Rowling. It's not about the color of the actors skin, but rather their talent and passion when playing the character. And with Dumezweni, an Olivier Award-winning actress and the Potter fame, the London theater seems like a perfect place to challenge all-white casting in film and television.
Who loves the cast like I do?
