Boku No Hero Academia: Battle for All

I've definitely written before about my love for the manga Boku no Hero Academia. It's anime adaptation has also just begun and is already one of the better anime of this season in my opinion. The hype train is well underway, and I think the anime brings a breath of creativity into the medium, because it's definitely more like an American comic style story than anything else out right now.

Alongside this new anime adaptation, the series is also getting a video game adaptation, in the form of a fighting game for the 3DS. The upcoming game is called Boku no Hero Academia: Battle for All and is scheduled for a mid May release in Japan.

I don't currently have a 3DS, though I was hoping to get one at some point in the coming future. Regardless I think this game looks like a bunch of fun to play, though probably more for campy fandom reasons than for actual gameplay reasons. I don't know how well a fighter works on the 3DS, though the benefit of having a screen all to yourself seems nice.

I can't imagine that there will be a lot of online competitive play. I don't really know the environment for the 3DS online component, but I can't imagine people would prefer to take their Smash games to the handheld device rather than the full console. I know that 3DS sales have started a precipitous drop.

I'd play this game if I had a 3DS, but I don't think that anyone who isn't already a fan of the series would pick it up on merit. Could be too early to tell.

In building up to the release of the game, Bandai Namco have been releasing character spotlights for all of the featured fighters in the game. So far, they've done spotlights on Deku, Kacchan, Ochako, Tsuyu, Mineta, Iida, Kirishima, and Todoroki, with his spotlight having just been released yesterday.

It looks like there's still more to come, as Momo is the going to be the next featured spotlight video.

It looks like there's differences between the play styles of each character, and they're not just cookie cutter characters with different skins. It makes sense, because all of their quirks are so dynamically different from one another. Ochako has a lot of aerial combos, Iida is fast, Tsuyu has a lot of grappling it seems, all things that make sense for their characters.

I wonder if they'll do something with Deku's quirk, and how the more power he uses, the more damage he does to himself. Part of all of these trailers is that every character seems to have a different bottom-screen action, though a bunch of them all just seem like power ups/buffs. Todoroki's is cool, because putting more power into either fire or ice gives a different buff. Fire makes him move faster, Ice makes his attacks stronger.

If I wind up coming into the possession of a 3DS sometime soon, I'll have to give this a shot. There might just be more to it than I thought at first. Bet the online play still sucks, though.
