Random Bikini Facts

Because it's the summer, and today (July 5) happens to be the birthday of the modern bikini...some random facts about bikinis and women's swimsuits: - Notice how I said MODERN bikini above? Two-piece bathing suits have been around since the Ancient Greco-Roman era especially for athletic purposes. - Ladies in the 19th century sewed weights into the hems of their swimsuits to prevent the garment from riding up and revealing their legs. - The modern version was introduced on July 5, 1946 by Louis Réard, a former French car engineer who was then running his mom's lingerie boutique. - Réard got the name "bikini" from the Bikini Atoll, a small group of islands in the Pacific where nuclear tests were held. Réard thought his new swimsuit will blow people's minds away like the destructive power of the atomic bomb did. - French actress Bridget Bardot is credited with popularizing the bikini. "It's been said that Bardot did more for France's international trade balance than the entire French car industry." Read more: http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1908353,00.html p.s. Thank you Mr. Réard :D
