Jailed Russian Singer Loses Appeal

A member of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot (jailed for performing a protest song in a cathedral) lost her appeal today. Maria Alyokhina was sentenced to two years in jail after her band condemned President Putin in a Russian Orthodox cathedral. Her appeal was rejected one year into the sentence, which is being served in Perm (1000 miles from Moscow). The case is part of a wider crackdown on dissent since Putin returned to the Presidency for this third term.
