our final task

Our final task is forgiveness Our final utterance that of love Hatred and darkness Increase and multiply Every act of selfishness, Every murderous thought Builds on a heap of ashes That Covers each moth-eaten heart Without our building Without our sweat and blood This heap of destruction grows And consumes Without my intent Heaps of rage Endless nothingness Suffocate fragile hearts And all I have left On my final day (Be that now Be that yet to come) Is my task of forgiveness And utterance of love That washes all the ashes The moth-eaten hearts And binds cracks and bruises And echoes Hope at last
