Understanding "Twists"

All yarn has twist, it’s twisted in the ply, it’s twisted when the plies are spun together, and when we crochet it, there are more twists. Plying is done by taking two or more strands of yarn that each have a twist to them putting them together. It is very important to understand the twist in a yarn because it has an effect on the fabric functions. Each yarn has a ply count, that means how many individual strands of yarn are twisted together. The individual plies in a yarn have their own twist, or what passes for twist. The more twist in the individual strands, the more twist the finished yarn will have, even when the individual plies are spun in the opposite direction of the finished twist.
