This is @MadAndrea here to give you a review of the recent release from EXO, "Dancing King"!
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
I love when songs include actual instrumental music. Many songs these days are more electronic and lack that. There are many songs I like that match that description; however, I truly appreciate something that makes use of instruments. In my opinion, this was different than songs we usually get from EXO. It had a different sound. Many EXO songs make me want to get up and dance, but this song made me want to get up and party. It wasn't too focused on deep lyrics. It was a song to party to. It's meant to make you want to have a good time. This was the goal and they achieved that.
EXO has songs that many times have deep lyrics. They have amazing ballads that are slow and meaningful. "What Is Love" is my favorite example of this. They poured their emotion into the delivery of those lines and you can feel it. They have light songs, but Dancing King was still very light and funky in comparison to songs like, "Love Me Right" or "Call Me Baby".
It had an extremely fun feel to it. It's something you can put on while you do chores and it'll lift your mood. I believe this is because it features Yu Jae Suk. He is a comedian. They probably wanted to make something more fun and lighthearted because of this. He wants to make people smile. This instantly puts a smile on your face and a pep in your step.
In case you don't know him, Yu Jae-suk, is a South Korean comedian, MC, show host, and television comedy show host. Nicknamed the "MC of the nation", a vote by South Korean netizens proclaimed him the most popular Korean comedian for five consecutive years. You may also recognize him from Gangnam Style by Psy.
All the boys sang well and in my opinion the lines were distributed fairly well. Usually certain members get the lion's share of the lines, but this time it wasn't too bad. However, Sehun and Chanyeol were left with very few lines. This is unfortunate, but I don't think rap entirely matched the song well, and for this reason I can be okay with that.
The choreography was simple by EXO standards. We have consistently seen EXO perform amazing and crisp dances, but this was different. They likely did this so Jae Suk could keep up. Simple isn't bad though. Simple choreo is still fun to watch as long as it is well executed and corresponds well with the energy the song is meant to provide. It fit the rhythm perfectly. Watching Jae Suk dance with them was heartwarming because you can see that he was having an awesome time.
So even if you think you have two left feet, when you dance to this song, you'll feel like you own that dance floor!
What did you guys think of it?
