There are a number of groups that pull off great concepts. However, VIXX not only raised the standard for incredible concepts, but they've set the bar extremely high. Every details of a vixx concept is thoroughly thought out and perfectly executed.
VIXX debuted with the funky, upbeat song Superhero back in May of 2012. Their style was still being developed but they did pack a punch. You can see little details of each member's personality reflected in the styling.
For the most part they paired black and white with small patches of bright colors. The music video is rife with bright set pieces and with bold and contagious choreography.
This is how VIXX began. Their first concept was fun but they were still developing.
VIXX's next release was Rock Ur Body. This concept was full of bright colors and imagery and both the song and MV feel like they came straight out of a video game. The choreography enhanced that feeling and thus the members of VIXX and their Jellyfish team were starting to get the handle of what it means to be a concept group.
Next, VIXX cameback with On and On. The concept revolved around a futuristic vampire story. The members donned coordinated suits and many of them drastically changed their hair colors. They adapted the components of their concept, from fierce choreography to colored contacts and painted nails. Every live stage was exciting to watch and fans were wondering what VIXX would do next.
In 2013, VIXX gave us Hyde and Leo with long hair. The concept for Hyde showcased the juxtaposition of dark and light and focused around demons. It also brought us some revealing outfits and showed off those nice muscles.
The follow up to Hyde was G.R.8.U, a lighter, funkier track. The boys shed the heavy, stylized make up and hard hitting choreography for a warmer, fuzzier feel. The dark wardrobe was traded for colorful patterns. The fierce stares gave way to smiles as VIXX warmed the hearts of fangirls everywhere.
With the release of Voodoo Doll in November of 2013, VIXX solidified their title of concept kings. From the stitch detailing on their wardrobe, to the large skull-headed pin prop, the intense choreography to the stage presence, the members of VIXX took on the roll of the voodoo doll victim with every move.
The Voodoo Doll MV is considered by many to be hard to watch due to the graphic imagery of the members being tortured by a deranged woman, but it is all heralded as one of the pinnacle Kpop music videos.
Next up is Eternity. This is track is about a love story that takes place through out time. From the clock theme to the flashbacks and faded memories in each of the members scenes in the MV, Eternity told quite a story. Also, those body rolls.
Error- Seriously, watch the music video and then tell me that didn't effect your soul!
Seriously though, VIXX pulled off the most sympathetic cyborg love story that ever existed. How realistic did they look and where can I buy my very own VIXX robot?
Again, every detail of this concept was perfectly executed. From the CG in the music video to the accessories in the live stages.
At the end of 2015, VIXX gave us Chained Up; perhaps their most revealing and provocative concept to date. From chokers to cuffs, these boys proved they were slays to love.
Starting in April of this year, VIXX unveiled the first installment of their 2016 Conception series with the release of the Zelos album and the title track Dynamite. Taking a break from series and heavy concepts, Dynamite is an upbeat, funky track featuring bright patterns and colors. The song centers around a man willing to do anything, even flip over the world in order to win back the woman he loves.
The Hades album was released in August as the second installment of the Conception trilogy. The title track Fantasy saw VIXX return to the dark roots and continued to weave the web of mystery and intrigue that has Starlights struggling to piece together the puzzle that is Conception.
Kratos, the final installment in the 2016 Conception series is set to drop on Halloween; a fitting date for the boys of VIXX. If the teaser images are any indication, VIXX is set to bring us another dark and moody concept. Just look at the lace and military uniforms.
