I just decided to make a list of MY personal top 5 saddest K-Dramas that I've seen, meaning it will only be dramas that I believe are the 5 saddest. This list may not have dramas that you want to be in the list because you think it's the saddest, that being said I may not have seen the saddest dramas that you have seen or I might not have thought they were sad enough to make it to this list. Please do not be offended if I did not mention the dramas you want in this list.
Once again this is MY PERSONAL LIST! Also there will be spoilers for all of the dramas or I wouldn't have any way of explaining why I think they are sad.
5. KILL ME, HEAL ME
The human body is capable of all sorts of things to survive difficult situations. Cha Do Hyun (Ji Sung) is a third-generation business heir who developed dissociative identity disorder (previously known as multiple personality disorder) in the aftermath of several life-threatening traumatic events. He tries to regain control over his life with the help of Oh Ri Jin (Hwang Jung-eum), a first-year psychiatric resident who helps him secretly. But Ri Jin’s twin brother, Oh Ri On (Park Seo-joon), is a writer who is determined to uncover the unscrupulous lives of the rich and starts following Do Hyun around. Can Do Hyun take control over his condition before one of his seven personalities takes control over him instead?
SPOILERS and MY THOUGHTS:
This show was probably more humorous than it was emotional. But it had so many scenes that just made me want to crawl into a ball and cry for the main characters. I fell in love with Do Hyun's 7 different personalities. They all made me laugh and some made me cry "A LOT". There are two scenes in specific that I clearly remember making me cry. Do Hyun and Ri Jin were kept in a basement when they were little to practice playing their instruments. Do Hyun told Ri Jin that if he made a mistake someone else would be punished. So when he made a mistake his father came down to the basement and locked Ri Jin in the basement for a whole day but Do Hyun came to visit her. The father was not happy that he visited her and would abuse Ri Jin. I felt so bad for Ri Jin, I just cried. I was so shocked when I heard the backstory of their past. Nana was actually Ri Jin! This drama did great with the whole mystery perspective. This drama has one of my favorite plotlines I've ever watched.
The other really sad part in this drama I remember was Do Hyun personalities leaving and saying goodbye to Ri Jin. I think this was extremely hard to accept. I loved the personalities so much and it was hard to say goodbye to them. Shin Se-gi's goodbye was definitely the hardest. I just kept crying. Se-gi was for sure my favorite personality, he was funny, loves to fight and of course he was sexy! The ost Auditory Hallucinations made every seen even more dramatic and sad but I loved it. I need to rewatch this drama along with the top 2 on this list. Lastly, I applaud Ji Sung's acting in this, to be able to play 7 different personalities is talent and he nailed it. It felt like I was watching 7 different people but it was the same person. I don't know if anyone else could've done better of a job than you did.
4. QUEEN IN HYUN'S MAN
Year 1694, Joseon Dynasty: Kim Bung-do (Ji Hyun-woo) is a noble-born scholar and his family's sole survivor after they were massacred in a conspiracy. Kim Bung-do supports the reinstatement of Queen In-hyun, who was deposed due to scheming by royal concubine Lady Jang.
Year 2012, modern-day Seoul: Choi Hee-jin (Yoo In-na), an unsuccessful actress, lands her big break when she is cast as Queen In-hyun in the television drama "New Jang Heebin". Due to a mysterious talisman, Kim Bung-do time travels to 2012, where he crosses paths with Choi Hee-jin and falls in love.
SPOILERS and MY THOUGHTS:
This drama right here was a highly entertaining drama to watch. I did stop watching it at one point because I got distracted from other dramas. But then I finally continued it and I'm so glad I did because I loved the ending so much! There are 3 major scenes that hit me hard in the feels. 1st one being where Hee-jin reads in a book that Bung-do died, she then gets into a car accident with her friend. It wasn't a major accident and she wasn't seriously injured but her heart was when she thought Bung-do died. She's in the hospital bed crying, her friend thinks she's in pain and hurt from the accident asking what's wrong but she just cries louder. She's in so much pain, her heart hurts and believes that he died. I couldn't help but cry with her and this scene made me believe that Yoo In-na is extremely talented to be able to make me bawl like that just watching her cry and scream from sadness. The 2nd scene is where Bung-do finally returns to her world with the talisman before the talisman turns completely dark and he gets sent back to his world. But right as he sees her on her phone crying, they look at each other and the talisman turns completely black and he disappears right from her eyes. She drops her phone and starts to cry. I do too. My heart sunk, I was like why they finally are back together and you do this...
The last scene is from the final episode where Hee-jin is in a movie theatre after finally getting her memories back, she soaked from the rain.
3. SCARLET HEART: RYEO
During a total eclipse of the sun, a 25-year-old 21st century woman, Go Ha-jin (Lee Ji-eun), is transported back in time to Goryeo Dynasty. She wakes up in the year 941, in the body of Hae Soo and there, she encounters the many royal princes of the ruling Wang family. She initially falls in love with the gentle and warm 8th Prince Wang Wook (Kang Ha-neul), and later Wang So (Lee Joon-gi), the fearsome 4th Prince who hides his face behind a mask and is given the derogatory label "wolf dog". Meanwhile, rivalry and politics ensue among the princes, in a fight for the throne, as Hae Soo finds herself unwittingly caught between it all.
SPOILERS and MY THOUGHTS:
So, this one is known to have it's shed of tears but to be honest I didn't think it was sadder than my top 2 which is why it's #3. This drama made me shed tears throughout the whole drama. Not just once. But the two saddest scenes for me were Prince Eun's (Baekhyun) death and Chae Ryeong's death. Both killed me so much. Other's deaths killed me as well but these ones hit me the hardest. Also I'm surprised they didn't make that big of a deal about Prince Wook's death but I didn't like him so I didn't really care. I got so attached to Prince Eun's character and was so upset when they killed him. I'm tearing up just thinking about the scene and the song that played during his death made it so much sadder. I wasn't that attached to Chae Ryeong but she was as Hae-soo said, she is her sister. Chae Ryeong was the first person to befriend when she landed in their world. She thinks of her as a sister and the way Wang So beat her to death hurt me just as much as it did Hae-soo. I was so mad at Wang So. He basically killed Hae-soo's only family and sister. This drama killed off over half of the cast which is saddening because they killed some of my favorite characters like Prince Eun...
One of them even committed suicide. This drama was extremely sad throughout after a certain point in this drama they just started to kill of everyone. The very last sad scene I remember from this drama was the very last clip in the last episode. Wang So and Hae-soo are together happily and Hae-soo jumps on his back and he gives her a piggyback ride. Both of them are smiling and that's what I wish the ending was like, them together happy. But in reality that's not what happened. It just made me cry more! I still liked the drama though.
2. FATED TO LOVE YOU
After each of them separately drinks a love potion, everything changes. Lee Gun (Jang Hyuk) is the successor to a large company run by his family. Kim Mi Young (Jang Nara) is an average-looking secretary in a law firm who earned the nickname “Post-It” for her inability to say no to her colleagues who dump work on her. When the two cross paths one night after separately having drunk a love potion, a comedy of errors occurs. Kim Mi Young goes into the wrong hotel room because the hotel door number accidentally changes, and the door is propped open by the mischief-making love potion makers. She ends up sleeping with Lee Gun. When Mi Young finds out afterwards that she is pregnant, what will become of them? And will Kang Se Ra (Wang Ji-won) and Daniel (Choi Jin Hyuk) just stand by and let Gun and Mi Young deal with the situation in their own way?
SPOILERS and MY THOUGHTS:
Fated To Love You is probably my 3rd favorite drama of all time. For some reason I love everything about it. I love sad dramas, it shows that they can make an impact on me and get me emotionally attached. This drama got me so attached to not only the two main leads but to their unborn child that they named dog poop. I loved the emotional connection the main characters created because of "Dog Poop", the child helped the couple fall in love. They were fated to sleep together that night, get married and fall in love with each other. If you've watched this drama, then you know what the saddest scene is from this drama. It's the lose of Poop. One day Lee Gun and Mi Young get into an argument, Lee Gun crosses the street and makes it to the other side while Mi Young is crossing and calling out his name she is holding the cup she painted their child on. A car then hits her, she falls and drops the cup. As it shatters, it's like a symbolism of poop dying. I knew at that moment poop was gonna die. Mi Young was begging to save the baby but Lee Gun decided to save her instead and the baby died. That broke my heart into pieces. This drama is so heartbreaking. But when they break up and meet later on they slowly get back together. This drama in my opinion has the BEST ending I've ever seen in a drama. Because when they get married again after their divorce, this time Mi Young gets pregnant with twins. It's such a beautiful story, and ending. I just love this drama so much!
A drama depicts love, frustration, growth and the competitive process of young people in their 20s becoming reporters as they cry and get hurt by truth but realize that as reporters, they must tell the truth. It will center the story of a man who hides a special talent living under a fake name and a woman who cannot lie due to ‘Pinocchio Syndrome’.
The story starts with a fire incident and all the firemen who entered the building in the blaze were killed by the fire. The fire incident news report was focused on the story of Kim Ha Myung's (Lee Jong-suk) father, chief of the fire brigade sent his men in the blaze and caused them all to die and then he fled the scene as an error of his misjudgment as reported by the news reporter, Song Cha Ok (Jin Kyung). This caused a chaotic situation for Ha Myung's family and end up causing his mother to commit suicide with him and his brother ends up in jail over night due to Song Cha Ok's untruth story. However, this led to Ha Myung growing up with hatred for reporters especially Cha Ok. Fatefully, as he is growing up he meets with Cha Ok's ex-husband and daughter, Choi In Ha (Park Shin-hye) and takes on a new identity as Choi Dal Po. In Ha is someone with Pinocchio Syndrome hence she cannot lie.
The story is about how important news reporting the truth. It revolves about how life's at stakes if lies are reported as news.
SPOILERS and MY THOUGHTS:
My #1 saddest kdrama is oddly enough also my favorite kdrama. Remember how I said I love sad kdramas? Well this one is also extremely sad. But in my opinion it's the saddest drama I've seen so far. I cried from the first episode. The backstory is what's the saddest throughout this drama. You see most of Ha Myung's and his families backstory in the first episode. It's such a heartbreaking past that would hurt anyone. Ha Myung, his mother and brother were all tortured by reporters when their father died. The reporters made it seem as though their father caused all the firefighters to die that day when the father also died. Although they couldn't find his body. The reporters caused so much stress for the mother of Ha Myung and his brother that she committed suicide and everyone thought that Ha Myung died with her but he was caught in the ocean and was adopted by the family of the woman reporter that caused misery to his family. He wants revenge towards this reporter. But the daughter of the reporter is someone Ha Myung cares deeply for. This drama had me bawling at least once every two episodes. The scene that made me cry the hardest and I believe made most watchers cry the most was the reunion between the two brothers. The reason it was so sad was because the older brother that believed that Ha Myung committed suicide with his mother was right in front of him. He didn't believe that his brother was alive until Ha Myung said something that made him believe it because it's something only he would know. Then the older brother told Ha Myung that he thought he was dead this whole time and that he killed someone for revenge. They both cried. That scene gets me every time. It's not just that scene but many others throughout the drama that made me bawl. Some with the female lead and her mother too. This drama just like "Fated To Love You" had a great ending that left me smiling and so happy!
So this was my list of saddest drama, I also highly recommend all of these. If the storyline's interest you at all then give them a try you might love them. I think these are all great dramas that everyone should at least give a try. Most of these hold a place in my heart. This card just reminds me that I really want to rewatch 3 of these dramas really bad but I have other dramas that I have to watch.
What's the saddest drama or dramas you've seen? Did I mention any that made you cry or you think is the saddest drama?
