미국 메인 주에 사는 48세 여성 진저 테일러(Ginger Taylor)에게는 정상 생활이 힘든 아들 챈들러(Chandler, 15)가 있다. 챈들러는 태어난 지 18개월 때였던 2003년 백신을 맞았다. 이후 챈들러는 사람을 똑바로 쳐다보지 못하고, 말을 제대로 하지 못하게 됐다. 자폐증에 걸린 것이다. 평범한 주부였던 엄마 테일러는 그날 이후 백신 반대 운동가로 변신했다.
미국 CDC(질병예방통제센터)는 유아들에게 ‘백신 접종’을 권하고 있다. 2015년에는 “백신과 자폐증 사이에 상관관계가 없다”고 발표했다. 하지만 테일러는 “백신과 자폐증의 연관성을 뒷받침하는 연구 결과들이 많이 있다”고 반박했다. 그는 그 증거로 무려 129편의 논문을 온라인 문서공유 사이트인 ‘스크립드(Scribd)’에 올렸다. 이들 논문은 백신의 부작용과, 백신 성분이 인체에 미치는 영향에 대해 다룬 것들이다.
문서 공유사이트에 129편 논문 올려
2014년 환경독성과 약리학 학회지(Environmental Toxicology and Pharmacology)에 실린 논문은 “수은이 자폐증을 일으키는 주요 원인”이라고 지적했다. 수은은 백신의 보존제로 사용되는 유기화합물 ‘티메로살(Thimerosal)’의 구성성분이다. 미국 텍사스 대학 건강과학센터는 2008년 “수은 등 적은 양의 유독물질에 장기간 노출되면 자폐증과 같은 발달 장애에 걸릴 위험이 높아질 수 있다”고 주장했다.
수은 외의 다른 성분도 문제로 지목됐다. 독성과 환경건강학 저널(Journal of toxicology and environmental health)은 2011년 “백신에서 수은이 제거돼도 자폐증을 유발하는 다른 성분이 존재할 수 있다”는 논문을 실었다. 같은해 무기생화학 저널(Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry)에는 “백신의 알루미늄 성분과 자폐증 사이에는 인과관계가 있을 가능성이 있다”는 논문이 실렸다.
“자폐증 뿐 아니라 면역질환도 일으켜”
백신이 자폐증 뿐만 아니라 다른 질병까지 유발한다는 연구결과도 있다. 미국 국립생물정보센터는 2005년 “백신을 맞은 뒤에 일시적으로 자가면역질환이 발생한다”는 논문을 수록했다. 자가면역질환이란 갑상샘염, 류머티즘 등 면역기능의 이상으로 발생하는 병을 뜻한다.
미국의학협회저널(JAMA)은 2004년 “홍역, 볼거리, 풍진 혼합백신인 MMR백신을 접종하자 열성 경련(열과 함께 경련이 발생하는 것)의 발병률이 높아졌다”는 논문을 공개했다.
“의사들은 백신과 관련된 연구결과 잘 몰라”
테일러는 미국 지역지인 ‘포틀랜드 프레스 헤럴드(Portland press herald)’에 “나는 (백신에 대한) 자료를 모으면서, 환자에게 조언해주는 의사들 대부분이 백신에 대한 연구결과를 잘 알지 못한다고 확신하게 됐다”고 말했다.
