Mamamoo's Black Face Scandal...When Will Kpop Learn?

Oy vey, come on Kpop! Get your act together!

At a recent Mamamoo concert, the girls did a parody of a Bruno Mars music video which is fine...until they came out with their faces covered in makeup to make them have dark skin :/

They released apologies in both Korean and English:

“Hello, this is MAMAMOO. We are extremely sorry for our insensitive actions and use of blackface in our video while portraying Bruno Mars. There is no excuse for what we did and there are not enough words to explain how regretful we are. We are heartbroken to have hurt our international K-pop fans so deeply. We love and care so much for all people of every race, sexuality, religion, and gender. We love all our fans and are so sorry to have hurt our fans in the black community.

“We understand now why our actions were wrong and we never meant to do harm with our video. We were extremely ignorant of blackface and did not understand the implications of our actions. We will be taking time to understand more about our international fans to ensure this never happens again. We hope that you will help to educate us on these and other issues so that we can become better people and better artists. Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention and allowing us to right the wrongs that we have done.”

Their company also posted about it on Facebook (which they've since deleted)

“Hello. This is RBW. MAMAMOO’s parody video of Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ at their encore concert has been misunderstood as a performance that belittles African Americans, and the controversy has been spreading through online community and social media sites.

“We had the intention of doing the [parody] in order to show a different side of MAMAMOO through a popular music video that is known by everyone. However, it has become a controversial issue and so we will be taking it out starting from the second round of concerts.

“We apologize for releasing a controversial video and we will pay attention to even the smallest of details [from now on]. We apologize once more.”
