Learn Korean: Lesson 1

I will be uploading at most 1 lesson per week. I really don't have a lot of time for Vingle these days, as I'm preparing to go overseas for University.(Ya girl got accepted into Seoul National University!)

But I still want to give the Vingle Community some love, and as I am slowly mastering the language I thought I'd teach you guys the language as well!!But I still want to give the Vingle Community some love, and as I am slowly mastering the language I thought I'd teach you guys the language as well!!

Lesson 1: The alphabet (알파벳)

The following are the first set of Korean consonants that you need to get into your brain. (There's no easy way to explain them, you just need to memorize them.)

ㄱ - K/G

ㄴ - N

ㄷ - D/T

*ㄹ - R/L*

ㅁ - M

ㅂ - B

ㅅ - S

ㅈ - J

ㅎ - H

** This sound is very difficult to write in English and is the reason why people from Korean/ Japan have trouble pronouncing the "R" and "L" sound in English. The sound of this letter (to me) is halfway between an "R" and an "L". It's not quite an "R" and its not quite an "L".

"K" and "G" used to represent "ㄱ".

or "D" and "T" used to represent "ㄷ".

or "R" and "L" used to represent "ㄹ".

Next are the basic vowels you will need to memorize:

ㅣ- I

ㅏ- A

ㅓ- EO

ㅡ - EU

ㅜ - U

ㅗ - O

You should notice that the first 3 vowels are drawn vertically and the bottom 3 are drawn horizontally. The difference is very important because the way every Korean letter is written depends on if the vowel is drawn vertically or horizontally.
