10 Things to Consider Before Choosing a Juicer

Here are the most important features to consider when buying a juicer.

Blender or Juicer

It's really not a question of one or the other. Using a blender for carrots, beets, or other hard veggies makes very gritty juice, but blenders are very useful for adding avocados, bananas, and other produce which clog non-commercial juicers. Unlike a blender, a juicing machine removes most of the pulp from fruits and vegetables. For smoothies (which create a smooth drink out of everything - skin, seeds, and all) your cheap kitchen blender will not do. Smoothie and juice appliances are available at kitchen stores and online.

There is really no need to purchase an "extended warranty" because the best juice machines have 10-year or better warranties. Look for machines with warranties that cover not just the motor, but all the parts as well.  


A great feature of new juicers are separate spouts - one that ejects juice and the other that ejects pulp. This makes for easier cleaning and a convenient way to spoon some pulp back into the juice for those who want to add more fiber. Juicers with pulp-ejecting spouts allow you to continue to juice, while centrifugal juicers store the pulp in a container that must be emptied regularly.

Tools & Attachments

These are just not needed! They add to cleaning time and tend to get lost. Avoid them! The best juicers are simple ones that need no tools or attachments.

Feeding Tube

This is the part of the juicer where you feed produce into the machine. If you have lots of small inquisitive children this tube should be long enough so little fingers can't get very far. The larger the feeding tube the larger the pieces of produce you can feed it thereby saving time cutting produce.

Dishwasher Safe

You should be able to conveniently place all the parts into a dishwasher.
