Japanese have a custom of visiting shrines and temples during new year holidays in January. They visit shrines and temples to pray for good health, luck on various things for the year. Some go to the local temples and shrines and other go to famous temples and shrines which are not in the area they live in. Meiji shrine in Tokyo is very famous, for example and every year 3 million people are said to visit there.
This year, however, not so many people visit shrines and temples during new year holidays.
