Although hemp and the cannabis plant (marijuana) belong to the same plant family, Cannabis sativa L, they are two different plants and have different compositions. The most notable difference is the amount of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) present in each plant. THC is the psychoactive part of the cannabis plant. It is the chemical that makes you feel “high”.
Although the cannabis plant has high levels of THC (up to 28%), the THC concentration of the hemp plant does not exceed 0.3%. Therefore, products derived from the hemp plant are unlikely to produce an “effect” and are used primarily for medicinal purposes.
