# Calculating formal charge

Calculating formal charge is easy! Step 1. Which element are you looking at? ex. let's look at the the C in problem A. Step 2. How many valence electrons does this element have on the periodic table? ex. C has 4 valence electrons. Step 3. 1 bond = one electron. 1 lone pair = two electrons. Count how many electrons are on your element. ex. this C has 4 bonds and 0 lone pairs = 4 electrons. Step 4. result from step 2 - result from step 3 = formal charge. ex. 4-4 = 0, so that C has a formal charge of 0. Now practice with the problems above! --------------------------------------- Answers for the pictures: A. H, C = 0. middle N = +1. right N = -1. B. everything = 0. C. C = -1, O = +1. D. H, C, top O = 0. N = +1, O = -1. E. H, C = 0. N = +1, O = -1. F. everything = 0. G. left = 0. middle = +1. right = -1. H. left O's and H's = 0. S = +1. O = -1. I. everything = 0. J. everything = 0. K. everything = 0.
