Before pregnancy: Women with diabetes

For women who have diabetes before becoming pregnant, there is a great risk of damage to their baby if the blood glucose levels are too high, including: - Miscarriage - Premature delivery - birth defects in vital organs - difficulty breathing/jaundice (yellow skin)/overly fat baby The mother is also at risk: - worsening of eye and kidney problems - infections of the urinary and vaginal areas - high blood pressure - difficulty giving natural birth (or requiring caesarean section) Talk to your doctor about what your goal blood sugar levels should be before getting pregnant, and get a pre-pregnancy exam. Recommended levels by the American Diabetes Association are: 60-119 mg/dl before eating 100-149 mg/dl 1 hour after eating <7% A1C.
