In English, we use articles to show the difference between two things. We use a definite article for things that are known for sure and an indefinite article for things that are not known for sure.


For example, we would say "The cat is on the mat." This means that we know for sure that there is a cat on the mat. We would say "I don't know if the cat is on the mat." This means that we don't know for sure if there is a cat on the mat.
