What is Poetry?
By Ruth Y. Nott
Poetry is a person’s attempt to make sense of his world in meter and rhyme.
Poetry is the beautiful structure and phrase of perfect prose.
Poetry is a dance with God, close and intimate, or jitterbugging across Eden’s fertile valley.
Poetry is the first shrieking cry of a newborn babe.
Poetry is the tear on the cheek of a mother at her child’s graduation.
Poetry is the arc and swish through the hoop of a far flung basketball in that last second effort to win.
Poetry is in the music of a babbling brook or the flash of sunlight on a churning sea.
Poetry is the wonder and awe of one minute bit of dust in an infinite universe trying to understand it all.
Poetry is, like beauty, in the eye of the beholder.
