Substance Abuse Professionals (SAPs) are individuals who have been trained to evaluate and make recommendations to employers, the Department of Transportation (DOT), and other entities regarding employees who have violated federal drug and alcohol regulations. They are responsible for determining whether an employee is fit for duty and able to safely perform his or her job duties after a violation of drug and alcohol regulations. They also make recommendations for education, treatment, and follow-up testing. In order to be a SAP an individual has to be certified by a Substance Abuse Professional's U.S. Department of Transportation Qualification Program.
