Anime Spotlight: Shikabane Hime (Corpse Princess)

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure why this is one of the most memorable anime series that I've watched. I mean, it's a great series, obviously - but it's also not a stand-out in some of the ways many of my other favorite shows are. Basically, Shikabane Hime, or "Corpse Princess," is the story of an undead school girl who is hunting down evil undead corpses (bet you didn't know there were good zombies and bad zombies lol), because she must kill 180 of them in collusion with a secret sect of monks in order to leave the cycle of violence and enter into heaven. It's based on a manga series by Yoshiichi Akahito. The art is in the style I love best, the action is very cool (and pretty graphic - if you're squeamish - but I mean, it is about undead zombie killing machines) and I really bought into the characters and their dilemmas. There are some pretty crazy weird scenes because as a zombie, her body is basically constantly disintegrating and getting damaged (duh), but I thought it was actually a very interesting premise and I see it as an interesting example of how female bodies are portrayed in anime (think the famous arm-ripping scene from Ghost in the Shell, when she's forcing open the tank). Most tellingly, I kept watching it, totally engrossed, through the whole series - despite the disturbing bits. And that's something the Walking Dead wasn't able to inspire in me haha.
