How to get iWork on an old Mac

Today, I was reading my news feed and stumbled on this post explaining how to get Pages, Numbers and Keynote for free on your old Mac. If you've bought a Mac since 2013, you can already download those apps for free in the Mac Store. Seems that if you install a trial version of iWork 09, Apple will simply upgrade Pages, Numbers and Keynote with the already free version in the Mac Store. Apple probably knows about this glitch but they do not seem to care. I tried it myself on my old MacBook 2009 and it worked. I had already bought the iOS version of Pages and Numbers. As for Keynote for ios, I got it free with my new iPhone. Now I can easily share my documents with my MacBook, thanks to that small glitch. Have you tried it? Did it worked?
