Why do some raindrops smell earthy?

After a long, dry spell, you might have noticed that the first raindrops bring a strangely pleasing earthy smell. MIT scientists did some investigating, and found out that in natural environments, aerosols may carry aromatic elements, along with bacteria and viruses stored in soil. These aerosols may be released during light or moderate rainfall, and then spread via gusts of wind. When the rain drops burst after absorbing some of the aromatic elements, the aromatics are released. Watch the footage to find more. Pretty cool, right?
