Discovered after a lightning storm in Tanzania, these exotic beauties were first thought to be glowing sapphires. But mistaken they were, because the molecular makeup of these are far more complex than sapphires. And if you're into esoteric lore, tanzanite is said to contain powers, provide healing to its wearer. True or not, tanzanite gems have only been in circulation since the 1960s when TIffany & Co. released them to the public, though it makes for good fodder when you're pouring a glass of wine and this monster is perched quietly on your finger.
This beauty up close and all around.
Though the stones were discovered more than 50 years ago, it is possible to find an antique ring containing tanzanite. However, this one in particular is newer in the vintage-style. The price is relatively low compared to the same ring containing sapphires. However, the popularity of tanzanite has recently made this the second most sought after gem behind sapphire. With that in mind, you can predict that the value will rise and rings will push into the outer limits.
This is what it looks like on human hands.
