What is Plopping, and How Can It Help Your Curls?

If you have naturally wavy or curly hair, then you might be familiar with the struggle of keeping your locks frizz free as they're drying.

Meet "plopping," the new trend for creating defined curls without heat styling. This isn't going to curl your hair if you don't have some natural wave or shape to it, but if you do, this is a great technique to try to make your daily hair routine a little easier.

Because a visual will really help understand this technique, check out this short explanation by Bouclème, who have a special towel just for this.

You might be wondering why they created a towel just for this. According to the founder, "Terry towels draw moisture from the hair, they ruffle the cuticles and mess up the curl pattern." Their towel absorbs excess water so the hair maintains hydration — which we know is essential for smooth curls!

Since I haven't tried this technique personally, I thought it'd be good to include instructions as given by someone who actually uses the plopping method on their own hair, like Youtuber The Polished Curl. She just uses a T-shirt (not a special towel) so don't worry too much about spending a lot of money on the towel as you try out this technique.

And lastly, a quick diagram in case the video wasn't a great explanation for you. This is also a technique that works best after you do it over a long period of time, so don't give up on it right away.

Good luck, and let me know if you have tried plopping on your hair!
