Your Summer Playlist Isn't Complete Without These Songs

Cookouts, pool parties, beach chairs on the sidewalk—..yep, the summer's here. One good thing about the summer is the energy of the music released during that season. There is an undeniable freedom within the lyrics and production of many songs created within the hottest season of the year. We have all felt the feeling of that special song you heard at the local BBQ, but maybe you can’t put your finger on the title. Below are five must play songs at every summer extravaganza.

1-Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff - Summertime

Your summer playlist isn’t authentic if you don’t have “Summertime” somewhere in the archive. Philly natives Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff create the ultimate rap song dedicated to summer vibes. The video, like the track, capture the essence of the season.

2. Dom Kennedy - "Watermelon Sundae"

“Watermelon Sundae,” is a must play when you put Dom Kennedy in rotation. This song is the prime reason members of the underground community call Dom “The King Of The BBQ.” DK’s flow on this track is poetry in motion, easing the listener from bar to bar. After listening to this track you will know it’s mandatory to that the weekends start with summer Fridays and end with watermelon sundaes

3. Ice Cube - "It Was A Good Day"

This song pulls you into a day in the life of average young man from Compton in the 90’s. Ice Cube was in rare form during this era, delivering rap gospel for people to live by. I love how smooth this beat is as well, perfect for cruising to.

4. Dr. Dre - let me ride

While this song lyrically doesn’t make you feel the essence of summer, it is still a west coast drop-top classic. Dre makes you feel what it’s like to be a young man from California on this one. No way if you were riding out West in the 90’s you didn’t hear this song on the radio.

5. Curren$y Ft. French Montana- "In The Sun"

This song is Curren$y at his finest. In regards to production this is a prime example of a smooth summer stoner beat. NYC transplant French Montana delivers one of his best guest verses ever on this song as well. Hopefully these two titans in the music scene link to create new music again soon.
