Z for Zachariah Explores Relationships in a Post-Apocalyptic Setting

I'm really excited to see this movie. I'm kind of obsessed with movies that are in post-apocalyptic environments and it looks like the film will put a magnifying glass on human relationships within a post-apocalyptic world.

As seen from the trailer (above), the focus is immediately taken of the event that put the world into a post-apocalyptic state. Most movies that deal with catastrophic events that change the way the world works spend too much time on the event that changed the world.

I like how the trailer assumes that the audience doesn't need to know the specifics of what happened in order to understand the state of the world our characters live in. The film (or the trailer at least) really treats us intelligent movie-goers/film-watchers/etc. by completely avoiding this piece of exposition that would drag down the point of the film.

Instead of placing importance on the state of the world, the film puts it on the dynamic between these three characters. It's almost as if the film (again, or trailer in this case) is an experiment to see how people react after a year or more of isolation.

The latter half of the trailer already shows us the tension that exists between Ann (Margot Robbie), Caleb (Chris Pine), and Loomis (Chiwetel Ejiofor). I really love how the narrative of the film surrounds a small group of people in an unusual environment.

Z for Zachariah will be in theaters August 21st, 2015.
