I first read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in 1997 (a friend of my mom's lived in the UK and was able to mail a copy to me before it was released in the U.S.) and I fell in love with the rich, magical world that J.K. Rowling created for us.
It has been 18 years since I read the book that changed all of our lives
I know. What is up with that?
I swear, this is one of the most decisive questions you can ask at a party. I have seen friends turn on each other based on their supposed sorting. And I have been quietly lurking on the sidelines, because I honestly have no idea which house I belong in.
The house of famous heroes, and of course the Golden Trio. I've suspected for a while now that the Sorting Hat places students in houses based on the traits that they value- not necessarily the ones that they embody.
You might belong in Gryffindor, Where dwell the brave at heart, Their daring, nerve, and chivalry Set Gryffindors apart;
Of course, everyone values courage, but I think it goes deeper than that
Sure, Hagrid did say that there was no witch or wizard who went bad that wasn't in Slytherin- of course he didn't know the truth about Peter Pettigrew when he said that.
Or perhaps in Slytherin You'll make your real friends, Those cunning folks use any means To achieve their ends.
Sure, too much self preservation can be a little bit selfish, but there's nothing wrong with taking care of yourself first and foremost
I have a special place in my heart for Luna Lovegood. She was one of my favorite characters when I was younger, and I still love her today.
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw, if you've a ready mind, Where those of wit and learning, Will always find their kind;
I actually really enjoy learning new things, but I'm not sure if I'd have the discipline for this house.
J.K. Rowling has said that this is actually her favorite house. They're not the most popular (probably because so few characters came from Hufflepuff), but they definitely have charm.
You might belong in Hufflepuff, Where they are just and loyal, Those patient Hufflepuffs are true And unafraid of toil;
There's something sort of appealing about a house based on justice and loyalty. Maybe they wouldn't run headfirst into danger like Harry and his fellow Gryffindors, but they might take a slower, steadier approach to righting wrongs. They might not be popular, but isn't that sort of their charm?
How does anyone choose?!
I get having strong feelings about which house you belong in, but what if you genuinely don't know? It's not like I can ask the Sorting Hat (jeez, I wish). How did you determine which house has your loyalty?
