Beasts of No Nation is the Most Important Film You'll Watch This Year

Beast of No Nation is a film that's coming out this fall that kind of has a thick history. Written and directed by Cary Fukunaga (who also directed episodes of True Detective), the film is about a child soldier fighting a civil war in an unnamed African country. Because of the film's subject matter; AMC Cinemas, Carmike Cinemas, Cinemark, and Regal Entertainment (four of the biggest theater chains) decided they would boycott the film and refuse to show it in their theaters. Fortunately, Netflix bought the distribution rights and the film will get a release.

The first teaser for the film was released recently and while it's intense and challenging to the viewer, I believe that it's going to be one of the more important films to watch this year.

There isn't much to see or learn about the narrative of the film but I will say it really sets the proper tone for the film. It covers some pretty serious subject matter and if it pulled any punches I don't think the film would work the way the director wants it to.

I also wanted to mention Idris Elba's performance. Not that it's a giant departure for him (since he's a really well-rounded actor), it's just that the way he acts in these 90 seconds is absolutely, 100 percent forever, terrifying.

Even though the film doesn't come out for a while, I believe that this is already a must-watch simply because it tackles a subject matter that many of us don't want to think about. In the short teaser above, it is already a very challenging film.

Beasts of No Nation comes out on Netflix on October 16th, 2015
