In summary: those that are loud get a lot of attention (aka Donald Trump, Chris Christie, Rand Paul, Mike Huckabee), and a lot of people talk about them the next day. But if you listened past the yelling, there were some really smart answers last night to some serious topics. These are the candidates that should really get the attention.
Here are just some fun highlights/zingers that everyone is talking about:
Neurosurgeon Ben Carson came right out and made a claim: “I’m the only one to separate Siamese twins, the only one to operate on babies while they are still in their mother’s womb and the only one to take out half of a brain, although you would think if you go to Washington that someone had beat me to it."
Uh, thanks Ben Carson...How does this apply to politics?
In a response to moderator Baier noting that Defense Secretary Ash Carter said recently that the armed forces is moving toward welcoming transgender Americans to serve. Mike Huckabee responded, “The military is not a social experiment. the purpose of the military is to kill people and break things.”
There is definitely a better way to make that point, Huckabee
After the news that Russian may have hacked the Pentagon was hacked, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker said members of the Russian and Chinese governments “know more about Hillary’s emails than the U.S. Congress.”
Yikes.
Megan Kelly Questioned to Donald Trump: “One of the things people love about you is you speak your mind, and you don’t have a politician’s filter,” she said. “However, that is not without its downsides, in particular when it comes to women. You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals. Your Twitter account…” “Only Rosie O’Donnell,” he responded.
Oh Trump...(face palm)
While this debate was the first one of the election season, and it seems really significant... it’s not that big of a deal if you missed it. There were a lot of issues brought up, but not a whole lot of productive conversation.
My suggestion: if you resonated with one of the politicians statements during the debate, look them up, discover what they really are all about. But don’t base your vote on one night of maybe 6 minutes of talking.
